3 semitruck crash causes that aren’t the trucker’s fault

On Behalf of | Jul 12, 2024 | Auto/Truck Accidents

Semitrucks haul goods all across this country, so it’s very common to see them on the roads. Because these vehicles can carry big shipments, they’re large and heavy. The size and weight difference between big rigs and most other vehicles makes them a major hazard.

When a semitruck crash occurs, some people might automatically assume the trucker did something to cause the crash. This isn’t always the case. These three causes of semitruck crashes aren’t typically the trucker’s fault.

1. Trucking company policies

Trucking companies sometimes promise quick delivery times or have policies that make it difficult for truckers to follow proper safety protocols. One example of this is when there’s a tight deadline that doesn’t empower truckers to stop driving if they’re fatigued or reach the limit of their hours-of-service regulations.

2. Improper maintenance

Maintenance on these rigs is critical. Components that aren’t working properly, including those that are defective, are hazardous. Think about how catastrophic it would be if the braking system failed or if the trailer came off the hitch.

3. Other drivers

Other drivers can violate the trucker’s right of way or drive in a way that makes it impossible for the trucker to drive safely. Things like cutting the trucker off or trying to block them from changing lanes are inherently dangerous and may lead to a crash.

Victims of semitruck wrecks can have catastrophic injuries, which necessitate immediate medical care. That case can be costly and it comes at a time when the person may not be able to return to work. They may opt to pursue a compensation claim against the negligent party, but this can be a complex undertaking. Working with someone familiar with these matters may help them to determine how to proceed.
