The 100 deadliest days of summer

On Behalf of | Mar 16, 2025 | Auto/Truck Accidents

School will be out in just a few short months. While students are likely very excited about this prospect, others may not be.

For instance, it is likely that the roads will get much more dangerous. Statistics show that the 100 days of summer tend to see an increase in fatal car accidents involving teenagers. This is a hazard not just to the teens themselves, but to everyone else who is sharing the road with them.

Greater crash exposure

When you look at individual accidents that happen during the summer, you can identify specific causes. Maybe a teen was distracted by their phone on the way to a friend’s house. Maybe they were listening to music too loudly while driving to a part-time job. Maybe they ran a red light or a stop sign.

But the real reason accident rates go up in the summer is simply that there are more teen drivers on the road. While teens are in school, they tend to be very busy with classes, sports, clubs and other activities. They do not spend as much time on the road.

However, summer creates a lot of free time. They may spend this time traveling (going to the beach with friends, for instance) or they may just get a job and commute back and forth to work. Teens already have the highest fatal car accident rate of any age group. Having more of them on the road during the summer just increases the risks for everyone.
