Highway work zones can be deadly places for workers and motorists

Oklahoma drivers have seen a lot of road projects during their travels this summer. This work generally results in better, more easily traveled streets and highways. However, these work zones can be extremely dangerous places for the men and women who have to do their jobs so close to traffic.

That’s why there are laws and other safety measures aimed at incentivizing drivers to slow down and, if possible, move over a lane when they approach these areas or see highway maintenance vehicles (or first responder vehicles) on or along the road.

Two important steps taken in Oklahoma to reduce injuries, deaths

A couple of years ago, Oklahoma strengthened its “Move Over” law. It increased the fines to $1,000 for a first offense and $2,500 for a second one. Of course, if someone is injured or killed, the consequences can be significantly greater. These changes in the law came after a five-year stretch in which some 1,500 people died in work zone crashes – including two Tulsa firefighters.

The state also introduced “Work Zone Safe.” This is an online course that teen drivers are required to complete before they can receive their intermediate license.

Motorists are also at risk

Work zones can be dangerous places for motorists, too. For example, when drivers don’t slow down when they see signs that they’re approaching one of these zones, they may end up stopping suddenly, which can cause a serious chain reaction collision.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured or a family member has been killed by a driver who didn’t heed the warning signs and directions in a work zone area, it’s crucial to seek compensation to deal with short-term as well as long-term expenses and other damages. This can be an overwhelming time. By having sound, experienced legal guidance, you can help ensure that, in addition to any criminal consequences the driver may be facing, they’re also held civilly liable for their negligence.
